William Gunn from Glasgow: he had asked parents for consent to his marriage with a Miss Brown, he was more mature than when he left home, was Vice President of the Andersonian University and reporter to Uncle's paper - written on paper with printed heading "Office of North British Daily Mail" (1851), reluctant to give advice but thought children should obey their mother before their aunt (1859); settlements and mortgage.

Entries for most days, sometimes including much detail, referring to his daily work (both farm work on his property and later his architectural work), also his travels, visits to and from neighbours, elections and political activities etc. Also an additional fragment of a 'private diary' for 1848 including references to his reading and botanical study. Note: Other diaries (1856-58, 1862-74) were in the possession of Mrs. L. Boyd in New Zealand in 1959 and a microfilm copy was made of these.

Collection consists of correspondence, letter books, diaries, notebooks and photographs relating to John Wilson & Sons boatbuilders.

Diary of Alexander Cheyne, dated 22 Feb 1848 to 3 December 1850, in Hobart (lodging first in Fitzroy Place and later in Macquarie Street). He notes his attendance at church - and comments on the preacher; the pain in his leg and wearing a lacing 'case'; and Captain Swanston preparing a case for his claim in re his dismissal from the waterworks contract. He also refers to the arrival of ships, the weather including snow in the streets of Hobart on 29 September 1849; to friends such as Dr. Lillie' , and James Thomson; the drowning of Mr Montague brother of 'the late Puisne Judge' (8 Jan. 1849); a duel fought by Edward Macdowell and F. Smith (1849) and his application for the post of town Surveyor in Melbourne.

Minutes of the Hobart Chamber of Commerce. Signed minutes, beginning with the inaugural meeting of 3 February 1851 and first formal meeting of 10 February 1851, including names of members. Includes monthly meetings of directors and general meetings. Some news cuttings of notices of meeting stuck inside binding.

Correspondence between James Grant senior and John Meredith written between 1851 and 1856. James Grant of Tullochgorurn: aprroved of John Meredith's choice of Maria Hammond who had been under his guardianship from infancy although she had relatives in Hobart but not necessary to communicate with them (1851); management of Tulloch gorum, Garth and Melrose, cape barley (1852); James junior may become tenant of Tullochgorum-at present away at North Down (1856)

Collection consists of one folio leather bound minute book and other material relating to the Chamber of Commerce including annual reports and handbooks and directories.
Minutes are incomplete, but annual reports or annual handbooks are complete from 1910 -1984.

Nancie Hewitt's notes on the Society of Friends (Quakers), including drafts of talks, "James Backhouse and George Washington Walker, adapted and summaries from 'a narrative of a voyage to the Australian Colonies by James Backhouse' for young friends by Nancie Hewitt" (typescript), photographs of pages of F. Mackie's "Journal" including sketch of Hobart Town 1852.

Collection consists of a photocopy of Mackie's diary dated 1852 - 1855 bound into two volumes with accompanying photographic prints and 35 mm. negatives of some illustrations contained in the diaries.
The diaries (except for the South African portion), with most of the sketches, were published in 1973 as Traveller underconcern, transcribed and edited by Mary Nicholls for the History Department of the University of Tasmania.

Endorsed with note from E. Dyer about key and pencilled verse.

Written from Tullochgorum: John's scarlet fever, pleased with contents of trunk, Maria liked her things - bonnet very ladylike and becoming - dresses fit well, day fixed for 9 February [? marriage] - bishop to perform ceremony, Miss Meadows bridesmaid, afraid to have Fanny and John in case James and Charlotte's children take it (?scarlet fever), Maria's little boy, Montague's visit. Cross-written.
