Diary notes dated 24 March -24 April 1904. Describes the journey from Australia to England on board the S. S. Australia. The first half of the diary contains information on the journey as far as Marsailles, after which he travelled by train to Paris. Whilst in France he visited Versailles, the Luxembourg Palace, the Louvre (twice), Notre Dame Cathedral, and other landmarks of Paris. The diary concludes with him in London.

Copies or drafts of letters of outward correspondence dated September 1904 to January 1905 written in pencil in an exercise book about supply of machinery, parts, repairs to engines, including notes on repairs to the boiler and engines of SS. Waldemar.

Typed copy of transcript made by Ronald E. Smith. This is a very detailed diary, noting daily work on the farm, seeds received and planted, stock sold or bought, orchard apples and other fruit, water wheel, water and drainage, trial of triangular troughs, seed drill, mowing machine. He tried a salt solution to treat the destructive parasite dodder on lucerne. As well as sheep, feed crops and orchard fruit, he tried angora goats. James Smith also noted daily payments made or received, letters sent, visits and visitors, including neighbours, E. N. C. Braddon and family, John Henry, Rev. Fairey, Col. Crawford and many others, and he even noted books or periodicals and other items borrowed or lent. His regular attendance at chapel on Sundays, usually the Congregational Chapel but sometimes the Independent or Wesleyan Methodist Churches or occasionally the Church of England, was recorded with the name of the preacher.
Prospecting trips and visits to mines are frequently mentioned and he had a laboratory built at his home. Other miners and prospectors visited to consult him, including Capt. L. Herbert Noyes of Mt. Bischoff, James Hancock and another James Smith from the Barrington Copper Mine.
James Smith took part in local activities and politics, including the School Board and the North West Railway League. He resigned from the Town Hall Committee over a proposal to establish a museum and open it on Sundays. He liberated salmon trout fry in the Forth and other rivers between 1887 and 1890. He "counselled Braddon not to be too extreme in advocating reform of the Legislative Council" (Dec. 1880).
There are occasional references to his wife and family: his wife was "delivered of a daughter about noon" on 23 September 1878, his wife and the children drove to Leven beach, the boys helped with farm work and in February 1891 Mrs Smith and her daughters went to a demonstration at the Town Hall on fixing photographs on glass by a Mrs Abrams.

Letters from Joseph Anderson, Norfolk Island dated 1835 and 1836 regarding his wife's health, saving of passengers and crew of shipwreck, would when time attend to G.W.W.'s kind hints and recommendations, description of settlement.

Two volumes describing L. Violet Hodgkin impressions of colonial life (not always favourable), the meetings and the social functions and detailed descriptions of the chief Friends’ in each place. In Hobart, where they arrived on the 9th of March, 1909, after brief calls at Perth and Melbourne, and stayed a Heathorn’s Hotel, Violet, described especially the Mathers, the Robeys and their daughters Linor and Margie, the Prosptings whose shop was not doing well, Edith Barnett, John Ridley walker, Elder of the Meeting, and his aunt Mary Augusta Walker. Violet Hodgkin and her brother held special meetings, talks or bible classes for the younger members in each place and in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide joined the Young Friends camps. In Hobart Violet describes several girls from Friends High School. Hobart, New Zealand and Adelaide were highlights of the visit. Violet Hodgkin does not say much about Sydney, where they spent two months, except for a visit to the Allens in the Blue Mountains, and the visits to Queensland and Melbourne were short and often difficult. Some photos of groups and people are stuck in the “Diary” account. There is also a photograph album of people met, groups and scenery (DX10/3)

Proposed voyage to Van Diemen's Land in ship 'Hope' June 1821 - January 1822. Papers relating to the proposal of some members of the Wesleyan Methodist Society to proceed to V.D.L . and the decision at meetings of 29 June, 2 July, finalised on 4 July, to travel in the ship 'Hope' owned by Messrs Degraves and Macintosh, Captain Francis Allison. However the ship was held up by HM Customs at Ramsgate, being both unseaworthy and overloaded, and the owners failed to provide the provisions and accommodation promised. The Government eventually chartered another ship, 'Heroine', to continue the voyage.

Two letters to Alfred Harrap from Robert Brooks & Co., London, about wool consigned to them by Harrap for the executors of the late A. I. Horne - no improvement in prices owing to the large quantity of wool on the market, with bill of lading (in duplicate) and insurance policy (in duplicate).

Testimonials dated May-June 1906 and March 1917 from Messrs. Patterson, Laing & Bruce of Melbourne: Tapping was employed as manager of their Hobart counting house which was shortly to be closed (1906); testimonial from N.E. Lewis: Tapping had entered the employ of R. Lewis & Sons in 1889 at the age of 16, Lewis & Sons transferring to Patterson, Laing & Bruce in 1889. Also note of "organisation work".

After the Armistice, there were approximately twenty organisations - religious, social and philanthropic - taking part in relief work in Central Europe. The Australian Relief Fund for Stricken Europe was inaugurated in 1921 to coordinate funding efforts, after Australians (including Margaret Thorp of the Society of Friends) returned from relief work confirming stories of distress, disease and starvation rampant in Europe. On her return, Margaret Thorp lectured and organised committees throughout the Commonwealth

Nine scripts ofmiscellancous ABC radio broadcasts for schools, written by Sansom, sometimes with Ruth Sansom' s assistance. Sansom recorded most of these with the assistance of his colleagues from the Speech Education Centre.
