• 102, 103. Congratulations on appointment as Government Storekeeper, July 1893.
• 96, 108, 109. Request for better accommodation (eg. 20 November 1893), pointing out that the cottage only had three rooms for a family of seven and that three children with croup had to occupy the same room as their parents, addressed to J.E. Packer [Edward John Packer. Under Treasurer] with replies.
• 111, 112. Letters from 'The Clipper' about his articles on heads of departments, 20 February and 21 March 1894.

Naylor's printing inks and varnishes for sale, proceeds of sale of Dr. Story's house to pay Lowe & Johnson, and also note about grass seeds, paint, wharfage etc, and letter from William Allen (1835) that dead cows might have been poisoned by a fungus in damp grass, suggests feeding on lucerne, clover, rye etc. (1831-1836, 11 papers);

*(48-65) bill for gun (1837); payment note: R.Wells (1842}, John Allen (1843); notes of produce sent, clothing; Francis Smith, Attorney General's Office 19 July 59: liability for road rates owed by former owner; payment note: boots David Hynes (1863); letter (signature missing): Haynes claim for debt v. G. Cotton (1871); E. Theobald, London: sent two telecopes and catalogue, Greenwich changed (1880); William Smith: apples, skins sold, wheat market low, wheel for repair (31.5.1882); A.C. Douglas, General Post Office: under paid letters or packets between U.K. and Tasmania (7.11.82, 15.11.82); A.W. Smith, Swansea: postage stamps (23.12.82); letters: bank: cheques received, shares, W. The volume was prepared while Lane was a prisoner of war of the French and apparently occupied himself in studying and teaching other prisoners. It contains French grammar (noted as completed 7 March 1812), exercises on Mr. Porney's grammar (noted as completed 29 February 1812), mathematical examples and problems, stocks and shares, chronology, navigational problems (with diagram and tables), book keeping with examples of business 'waste book', 'balancing journal' and ledger entries for 1807 and 1812-13 based on supposed voyages and trade dealings.
At the back of the volume is a rough pencil sketch of the 'privateer that chased Captain Lane'. Also entered on blank pages at the end of the volume is a copy of notes concerning Captain Benjamin Lane sent by James Arthur Lane to his daughter Mrs D.A. Lane, 20 June 1945 and notes by Lt. Col. D.A. Lane (descendent of James Christmas Lane, younger brother of Benjamin), 18 November 1945.
