Receipt book for hire of piano from Walch & Co. 1911 - 1917

File consists of multiple items including Fullers "Bookshelf Library" catalogues, sale notes 1936 etc., publishers' lists, notes of trip abroad, 1954; also cards, bookmarks, labels and small jig-saw puzzle and library notice.

One scrapbook dated 1950 - 1954, includes advertisements and cuttings mainly relating to Fuller's Bookshop.

Sorry to hear he was ill on voyage, regards to Mr George Meredith and family - glad to hear they were well, sending letter with packet of newspapers by "Hope" and also letter in March by Mr Dunn, news of King, harvest, high rates and tithes, insurrection of Greeks against Turks.

His writing better, young Gregsons read well, hopes John practices, Governor's [Arthur's] son going home to England to be educated -cannon salute on boarding ship, drawings and maps received from England for geography and history lessons.

Two letters from Rose Grant to Fanny Meredith dated 14 January 1854, and 1 February 1854. Written from Tullochgorum: John's scarlet fever, pleased with contents of trunk, Maria liked her things - bonnet very ladylike and becoming - dresses fit well, day fixed for 9 February [? marriage] - bishop to perform ceremony, Miss Meadows bridesmaid, afraid to have Fanny and John in case James and Charlotte's children take it (?scarlet fever), Maria's little boy, Montague's visit. Cross-written.

Letter from Charlotte Yeoland to Fanny Meredith, dated 28 October (no year). Birthday greetings to Fanny and John, farm, death of friend Mrs Taylor, loss of mother, Fanny's godchild growing, children only have dry bread for breakfast and tea -cannot afford butter, no fruit for jam - Mrs Nixon sent gooseberry cuttings and library books.

Letters from Walworth Baguley, Smithton written 12/8/1914 and 20/5/1915. Two photocopies of original letters, signed W. Baguley, written from Smithton and Irishtown, addressed to 'Wilkie'. He describes attempts to establish a settlement in North West Tasmania: 'Blythe and I are at present squatted in the midst of a vast forest…' They hoped to obtain a grant of 10,000 acres on condition 50 people were settled there within three years and has had a promise from 5 cabinet ministers to that effect. The organisation was to be known as 'The Tasmania Colonizing Association Ltd.' In the meantime they were clearing timber and living in an old surveyors' hut 24 miles from Smithton - 'Smithton has a population of about 500, six stores, seven churches, 1 pub. 1 school, a sawmill, post-office etc.' By the time Baguley wrote his second letter they had been joined by 3 men, wives and children from British Columbia, Canada, but the bill to authorise the land grant had been defeated (although they hoped to try again) and so they had taken various jobs, including road making. Baguley also referred to the war - 'Bad job isn't it' - and sent 'kind regards to all in the office', probably his former colleagues since he also commented that now 'I ... shoulder an axe and walk into the forest, just as naturally as I used to walk up stairs to that refrigerator called an office in Birch St., Dunedin!
