Biographical history

Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, 1st Baronet RA (8 May 1735 – 15 October 1811) was a notable English portrait painter and later a politician. Third son of architect George Dance the Elder, Dance (he added the 'Holland' suffix later in life) studied art under Francis Hayman, and like many contemporaries also studied in Italy. One of his best-known portraits was painted soon after his return to England—Captain James Cook (1766, Nat. Maritime Mus., London).

Presented by A.J. White, Agent-General, London, 1970 to commemorate the bi-centenary of Cook's landing.

Engraved mounted print carried as a despatch in 1970 on the Barquentine "Regina Maris" to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the voyage made by Captain Cook and newspaper cutting on the sale of Cook's log book and journal.
Engraving by W. Hall, from the painting by Nathaniel Dance (1776), printed by Fisher, Son &Co., with facsimile of Cook's signature. Printed about 1820.
