Copies of letters written by John Martin, June to November 1849 to his brother David, from Dublin, the ship 'Elphinstone' and from Bothwell, Tasmania. Martin was an Irish political prisoner transported to Van Diemen's Land.

Affidavits that there is no impediment to marriage, with additional affidavit of consent for those under 21, and of consent of the Lt. Governor for prisoners of Crown. Both made before Robert Russell, appointee of Moderator of the Presbyterian Church. Made at Morven ( now Evandale) Stephen Collins and Louisa Freelth, and Thomas Spinks and Mary Jones.

Letter Book dated December 1840 to 22 January 1849. Copies of letters, extracts and notes on letters sent, mainly relating to business affairs. Subjects and correspondents include: business interests in Hull, U.K. (William Bell and Avison Terry: Land of Green Ginger property etc.) transactions over wool, produce and stock (Henry Reed, Launceston); banking, insurance; property (P. Oakden, James Aikenhead, John Dunn) and Ashby property); politics and Legislative Council (Sir J. Eardley Wilmot, Joseph Archer, F. L. von Stieglitz); proposed college near Campbell Town (Archdeacon R. R. Davies); taxes (P. Fraser, Collector of Internal Revenue); debenture bills (J.E. Bicheno, Colonial Secretary); applicant for official post (Edward Nicholas). Also copies of Government regulations on land grants, quit rent, petitions against quit rent etc. probably made earlier (vol. b).

Copies of letters from Thomas James Lempriere (1796-1852) public official, author and artist who served as Commissariat at Sarah Island (1827–30) to George Maclean, Deputy- Commissary-General, from Sarah Island, Macquarie Harbour, Van Diemen's Land, dated 18 June 1846-26 October 1847, reporting provisions and work of the prisoners sent to get huon pine etc. The letters of the 18 and 26 October 1846 report arrival, inadequate habitation (houses having been burnt down) and prisoners refusal to work on building. The second document is a Daily Strength Register of the troops stationed at the Military Establishment, Macquarie Harbour, April 1846-October 1847 including a list of Convict passholders.

Letter regarding Robert Simpson dated 1846. Inquiry from Glasgow solicitors to Gunn about a Robert Simpson who was convicted of theft in Glasgow in 1823 and transported, convicted again in 1840, but not heard of since, was next of kin to an uncle recently deceased.

Correspondence from Capt. Wood of Hawkridge, Snakebanks, concerning his financial distress, debts, loans from Leake, mortgages on his property, attempts to sell "Windfalls" etc.; Leake to take his property and assets in trust (1844), meetings of creditors; some letters from Louis Wood when Wood was ill. Also promissory notes, accounts, letters from John Swan (1844, 1846, 1850) and Henry Priaulx (1844). Wood's letters frequently mention his wife's poor health and his own illness and also include general references: servants 1834-6); sun dial (10 Sept. 1836); ball (14 May 1842); river flooded 350 acres of corn (14 Sept. 1842); rebuilding river banks (Oct. 1842); fire damage in Hamburg (2 Oct. 1842).

Collection consists of farm and weather records of William Pike's Park Farm and Jericho, Tasmania, also included is the journal of William Pike voyage to V.D.L with his family on the ship "Thalia" August 1822 to July 1823

Circular letter from the Bishop giving notice of confirmation on 18 May 1844, advising that the 'most proper age for confirmation' was sixteen and that careful teaching was necessary in preparation. Plus xerox copy of similar notice 1846.

One parchment document of the convict record of Daniel Ellis, No 266 per Manlius, tried Lincoln 18 July 1829, transported for 7 years and again 7 years 1834, offence stealing bundle of draper's goods. Record includes description (trade quarry man and carter, aged 28 in 1834, dark complexion, tattooed etc) and conduct record (hulk report bad, numerous charges of stealing, neglect of duty, absconsion etc brought by employer, Archer 1831-1834, further sentence, conduct at Port Arthur bad), recommended for conditional pardon 7n/46.

Collection consists of five letters from a Quaker, John H. Fisher, in Hobart to his brothers, Reuben A Fisher and Thomas W.Fisher in Cork, Ireland.
John Fisher asked for news of his family, mentioning particularly his sisters May, Susanna and Margaret, Uncle John, cousins and friends and the other apprentices and he inquired if brother Thomas was still apprenticed to Henry Morris. His past misfortune was his own fault and he did not expect friend Thomas Harvey to forgive him (F.1/2) and he wanted to know if the Friends Society had disowned him and how people he owed money to felt (F.1/4). He had not been much to the Friends Meeting House in Hobart -- it was very different from home (F.1/3). Fisher had been in Port Philip and went into the bush but had an accident crossing the Goulburn River when a bullock dray ran over his legs and broke his thigh. In Hobart Isaac got him a job as overseer to David Lord but he was the only free person employed. Now he was working with Isaac who was teaching him hat making (1843 F.1 /2) but in 1845 he wrote that hats could be imported more cheaply and Isaac was fell mongering - getting up wool for the English market (F.1/4). There was a depression in Hobart but his life was comfortable. Hobart had 4 insurance offices, 4 churches (2 English, 2 Scotch), a Catholic chapel, 4 dissenting houses and a Friends Meeting House. In his last letter, dated 11 November 1845, John Fisher says he is thinking of
trying for Californian gold. One letter was later endorsed with a letter from A. Fisher to Thomas dated 31 . 12 . 1894 from Dymond City, N.C., enclosing the letters from their brother John and commenting on A.F.'s good life in the U.S.A., news of his children and his
farm on which he still led an active life although both he and Thomas had "passed the three score and ten"

Letter received from Samuel Cook, Adelaide, dated 19 January 1845. South Australia, Jacob Hayn's goats and copper mines, J. Hayne married sister of Baker a director of Bank of Australia, Quakers, taking a run on Murray River for pigs and fish.

Letter to Francis Cotton from Abraham Davy dated 7 November 1844. Davy remembered his visit to the Cottons and the Cottons visit to NSW. He also mentioned his family - Helen making progress at school, Meetings, Quakers Ruth Allen and J.P. Robinson, plainness of speech, T. Pollard's children, second marriage.
