Published

Sketches, mainly in pencil and crayon, made by Olive Muriel Pink of flowers found in the north of South Australia, Central and North Australia. The majority were made between June and December 1930, at various places along the railway between Port Augusta and Alice Springs. Later sketches were made in various parts of Australia between 1931 and 1960, but often without a note of the place and date. The sketches were often hurriedly made on pieces of thin, cheap paper, or even pieces of cardboard or brown paper. Some were coloured with crayon and a few, more finished drawings were coloured with watercolours. A later donation was made of books, personal belongings and sketches. A second series was received from the family of Olive Pink in 2016, this series includes Olive Pink's book collection, photographs, paintings, letters, items of clothing and other ephemera and memorabilia, some of which are nationally significant in their own right - such as the book plate made by Adrian Feint, notes and sketches done whilst camping with Daisy Bates, and photographs documenting life in Central Australia.

Olive Pink images in the following: https://vimeo.com/417511570 - Kaja-warnu-jangka ‘From the bush’ is a new, unique biographical tribute to two senior Warlpiri men, Jerry Patrick Jangala OAM and Henry Cook Jakamarra, who tell their own narratives of their remarkable lives over 85+ years. Dynamically bringing together previously unpublished footage, oral histories and photographs from over many years, it shows historical aspects of a remote desert community and the living endurance of traditional values of kinship and law. Expounding the themes of courageous resilience and embrace of change, it is the product of a collaboration by PAW Media Warlpiri film-maker, Maxwell Walma Tasman Japanangka and ANU linguist, Carmel O’Shannessy, who has been involved with the community for over 20 years. It was inspired by people in the community suggesting the need to document the two senior men’s lives. The film is mostly in Warlpiri, with subtitles in English. It is 1hr 09 mins long.

Olive Pink's paint box and other art works are held at TMAG. Other Olive Pink ephemera is held at the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, Alice Springs, Northern Territory.

Was never able to paint it from the plant and it faded when sent in. Worked in the Government Analyst’s Department in both Hobart and Perth. Southern was killed in action at Gallipoli 10 days after he landed – leading his men (as a Captain) at Pope’s Hill ( May 2nd 1915). He was a nephew of Benjamin Sheppard, who was the sculptor for the Boer War Memorial Soldier in Hobart Domain. Black and white postcard of the air craft carrier the HMS Terrible at the HM dockyard, Devonport , England , being recommissioned as the HMAS Sydney, Australia's first aircraft carrier. She was handed over to Australia during a ceremony at Devonport on 16 December 1948 at which she was renamed HMAS Sydney by Mrs J.A. Beasley, wife of the Australian High Commissioner to the UK. Attended Mrs H. Barnard's Ladies' School in 1887-93, and was trained in the domestic arts by her mother. On leaving school she worked as a retoucher at Richard McGuffie's photographic studio. In 1896-1901 she studied painting, modelling, life-drawing and china-painting at Hobart Technical School under Benjamin Sheppard. In 1898-99 she spent six months at Julian Ashton's art school in Sydney. Early in 1909 Miss Lovett moved to Sydney and in 1910 succeeded Long as second-in-charge of Ashton's Sydney Art School. Until the mid-1930s she exhibited regularly with the Art Society of Tasmania and the Society of Artists, Sydney, serving on the latter's committee in 1911-19. More information : http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/lovett-mildred-esther-7249Returning to Hobart Miss Lovett painted miniatures, gave private tuition and in 1906-08 taught modelling and life-drawing at Hobart Technical School. Lucien Dechaineux encouraged her to start china-painting classes, and supplied her with designs from native flora. In 1909 in Art and Architecture Ashton praised her 'superior' china-painting. A vase she painted that year from a design by Sydney Long (Art Gallery of New South Wales) is one of the most characteristic examples of Australian Art Nouveau work.

1 handwritten note on paper - A kind of wild Hybicus [Hybiscus] which they stupidly call the "Desert Rose". Hardly anything less like "a rose" I cannot imagine. The buds however do look a tiny bit like rose buds (if one has plenty of imagination!)
