News cutting books

Cuttings of historical interest from newspapers, chiefly Mercury, Australasian & Argus and The Critic, stuck in albums made from old catalogues (e.g. Army &Navy Stores) or old medical diaries. There are rough indexes to each volume except the first two. The volumes were originally numbered 16 -42; no volumes 1 -15 were received, possibly the numbers were left for the cuttings still loose in envelopes (see P.1/20) or they may refer to other notebooks and files.

No.10 includes notes on schools, pages from statistical returns 1869, notes from the Glamorgan Council minutes 1860 - 1908 and some letters in answer to queries 1923 - 1928;No.5 includes an extract from the Hobart Town Courier 23 Jan. 1850, describing St. John's Church, Prossers Plains and its consecration (another copy is in No.8), part of the will of Robert Hepburn of Roys Hill, Fingal and rough notes from Dr. G.F. Storey's diaries and accounts in the Mitchell Library; No. 7 consists of rough notes of events arranged chronologically, 1821 - 1921;

The taking Dido : from Dr. Story's Diary

A copy of an extract from Dr Story's diary, the original dating from November 1855, the copy taken by Mrs Collins Amos of Glen Gala in 1929. The diary entry concerns the apprehension of the bushranger 'Dido', who had assaulted Story and Mrs and Miss Cotton while travelling. Earlier on, Dido and a companion had confronted the police constable J Watson, and stolen his horse. With Mr Fergusson, Story assisted Watson in apprehending Dido, an action Story felt entitled him to part of the government reward offered for Dido's capture.

Three letters written by Frederik Rapp to Doctor Parker dated 17 March, 16 July & 15 December 1928 regarding the history of Waterloo Point, Great Swanport and the Municipality of Glamorgan in the late 1800's. Mention is made of the old church on the school reserve, the old school, now the War Institute, the pews from the church, various residents, hotels, sailing vessels and the building of the jetty

A : Correspondence and Papers

Letters from descendants of settlers on the East Coast in answer to requests from Dr. Parker for historical information. Some include personal reminiscences or reference to documents or sketches (sometimes offering the loan of them) but others are vague or have no information. Also letters mainly about historical queries and East Coast families, correspondence with Angus Robertson and Miscellaneous invitations. Also included are a copy of the bylaws of the Swansea Rifle Club.
