Xeroxed copy of Robert Doctors account book for the years 1827 to 1851 with details of goods and services supplied by and to various residents in the Sorell area, including: boots, shoes soled and heeled, plough mould, beans, handle, tobacco, rum, sugar tea, callico, coffin, bread, repairing cart wheel, laying floor, shingles, glass, making ploughs. Also payments made.

Letter: Henry Allison to Margaret Gunn dated 29 January 1852 regarding journey, cricket game, tea with Dryburgh, friends, Mackersey wanted an oppossum to send to Stephenson's wedding as there would be a good many blacks there dancing round a fire and they could roast one, the children, love to Gunn family.

Correspondence between John Leake and his wife, Elizabeth, for the years 1822, 1829, 1849-1852 mainly about the farm, business, servants, family, neighbours, church. John Leake also refers to the Legislative Council, state of the roads, news of friends etc. Notes were added to Mrs Leake's letters by sons William Bell and Charles and daughter, Sarah.

Letter from George Meredith to his daughter Fanny dated 24 Dec. 1853 - As "Miss Meredith" considered to be the mistress of the house and so expected to be at home when visitors were received; Miss Grant's marriage; Mrs John expecting to be confined in January; Mrs Charles avoids Cambria. Endorsed with note from E. Dyer about key and pencilled verse.

Written from Tullochgorum: John's scarlet fever, pleased with contents of trunk, Maria liked her things - bonnet very ladylike and becoming - dresses fit well, day fixed for 9 February [? marriage] - bishop to perform ceremony, Miss Meadows bridesmaid, afraid to have Fanny and John in case James and Charlotte's children take it (?scarlet fever), Maria's little boy, Montague's visit. Cross-written.

Papers and letters concerning Leake acting for friends and neighbours as executor of wills, trustee of settlements, or as charitable donor and adviser to friends or old neigbours from his Hamburg days fallen on bad times, as with the Graham family formerly of Hamburg.

Letter, John Roberts to Henry Allison, husband of Margaret dated 17 November 1854. His recent visit, won a horse race, cricket, fancy dress ball, remembrances to Mrs Harry and the small boy.

Collection consists of a photocopy of Mackie's diary dated 1852 - 1855 bound into two volumes with accompanying photographic prints and 35 mm. negatives of some illustrations contained in the diaries.
The diaries (except for the South African portion), with most of the sketches, were published in 1973 as Traveller underconcern, transcribed and edited by Mary Nicholls for the History Department of the University of Tasmania.

Letters from William Knibb Morris to his mother dated 1855. Description of embarkation at Liverpool on the "Boomerang", signing bounty tickets, etc. (incomplete letter, undated c Jan. 1855); part of letter describing voyage from Melbourne to Hobart in screw steamer "City of Hobart" and arrival, met by James and Isaac Cash "dressed in colonial style with large slouching white felt hats", James had only one child James William "a most beautiful little chap just running alone", another expected, landed on Queen's birthday - kept as strict holiday, rumours of Mr Bryan drinking false, Mr Freer proprietor of low theatre [25 May 1855]; Hobart: business depressed but father got job immediately with R.A. Mather, W.K.M. working for ironmonger Mr Marsh, serving in shop and keeping books, went to live with James and Mr Bryant but James charged 18s for lodging, not paid Mather for tickets but "James thinks he would not take it", Jim had daughter born last Friday [ie 13 July 1855] (16 July 1855); sorry to hear brother Tom had smallpox, sending money, kindness of employer, gathering "beautiful yellow flower of the wattle tree", father and James had built little shop in backyard to work at shoemaking - at work on pair of wellingtons (9 September 1855).

Letters from William Knibb Morris to his brother Thomas John Morris dated 2 February 1855-18 October 1855. Journey by rail to Liverpool to embark on "Boomerang", voyage - very healthy, did not lose a single adult and only five children, arrival, job with Marsh & Brother, made galvanic battery, not done much photography as it was winter, glad to hear brother converting shed to dark chamber, several photography places in Hobart to get collodion, one [Walter] Dickenson showed his collection of pictures and hinted he needed assistant but "it would require great inducements for me to leave the commercial for the artistic .. ", photography processes, enclosing small sodium chloride print (July & August 1855), James' new baby daughter born (July 1855), description of job, Marsh's tokens - shortage of copper coins (August 1855), Isaac Cash, sending money, glad Tom recovering (October 1855).

Unidentified account book recording trading, shipping and other expenses (1855-6). Reference to Luckman. Later entries, roughly written, appear to relate to household type expenses.

Certificate No. 5185 dated 2 May 1856 of the Court of Examiners that John William Hadden, V.D. Land, had been examined and admitted to membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Signed by the President, Vice-President and 6 others.

Edinburgh University was originally the College of Edinburgh or the Town's College founded in 1583 by the Town Council of Edinburgh under a charter granted by King James VI, 14 April 1583, and was generally known as 'The College of James VI'. It gradually came to be styled University of Edinburgh, but remained under the Town Council until 1858 when it became autonomous. The arms (shown on the seal) granted in 1789, are: Argent (silver) on a saltire azure (blue), between a thistle proper in chief and a castle on a rock sable (black) in base, a book expanded on (gold).

Certificate No. 478, dated 2 March 1856 from the Medical Board of the Colony of Victoria to certify that John William Hadden is a legally qualified medical practitioner

Garrison order book for the 96th Regiment dated 6 April 1847 - 9 March 1848. Also daily record book kept by Thomas Samuel Stewart who was the Commissariat Storekeeper at Norfolk Island when it was finally abandoned as a convict settlement.

Collection consists of Protestant hymns printed for special services in Hobart churches, chiefly Wesley Church and Brisbane Street Congregational Church.

These memoranda booklets, and papers consist chiefly of scattered and intermittent memoranda (possibly 'noted for later use in writing up a 'journal beginning with 'a note: 'Nov. 9; 1833 left Scotland in steamer for London; Feb. 9 1834 Left Portsmouth … on the James Pattison, Middleton Master'. Notes of his appointments, journeys, and other memoranda, sometimes written more than once in different forms on different pages continue up to 1847, with an odd page possibly for 1852. There are also notes of the dates of birth or death of brothers and sisters etc. In the middle is a complete detailed diary of his life and work at King George Sound, W.A., 14 November 1834 - 18 November 1835, referring to road works, shipping arrivals, Mr Douglas' sale, John Cheyne (?brother), letters from Dr. Turnbull Governor Arthur's private secretary and on 18 November his departure for Hobart. A note amongst the memoranda states: April - August 1841 'see small memoranda book', but this diary is missing. However the diary begins again in July 1842 and continues until December 1842 and from July 1843 until July 1844 and January 1845 until. I December 1847. This diary includes general entries of his daily life and especially his financial situation and claims for dismissal from his post, with some notes of travelling and references to Scots Church and Rev. Dr. Lillie. In October 1846 Captain Swanston showed Cheyne the plan for the reservoir. This diary is continued, with only a short gap in the manuscript diary C.3/1. . Many of the pages are dark and discoloured and in July 1844 many are torn and scraps only of some pages remain. The quality of the microfilm print is poor.

Written on large narrow folio pages, which have been filmed sideways (necessary to use a reader which can be turned) and the quality of the microfilm print is poor. This diary includes general entries of Cheyne's daily life - referring to preachers at Scots Church, visitors (James Turner's child pulled a coffee pot over itself and scalded itself); and also road works at Ross, Campbell Town etc
